Milk Bone Dog Treats

If your dog loves Milk Bone dog treats you may find yourself buying box after box at the supermarket. Although this brand is highly respected and has been around for a century, some dog owners would rather bake their own dog treats. This is especially the case ever since the massive dog food recall where top brands were taken off store shelves due to dangerous contamination. If you are one of those people who would prefer to make homemade dog treats rather than buying them from the grocery store you will be pleased to know it is an easy thing to do and requires only basic ingredients.

The ingredients necessary to make homemade Milk Bone style treats can be purchased at any grocery store. You may even have them at home already. You will notice that the original Milk Bone flavor is quite bland. This recipe is for the original flavor, however you can add to it if you like. Ideas for additives include cheese, carob, peanut butter and meat flavored baby food. Under no circumstances should you ever feed your dog chocolate, raisins, grapes, onions or garlic. These foods are toxic to dogs. Here is what you will need for the basic biscuit recipe:

3/4 cup warm water
1/2 cup margarine
1/2 cup powdered milk
1 teaspoon salt
1 beaten egg
3 cups wheat flour

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Combine all ingredients except for flour. When ingredients are well mixed slowly begin adding flour. Knead into a firm dough. You may want to refrigerate the mixture to make it easier to work with. Roll the dough onto a floured surface and cut out the treats. You can use a bone shaped cookie cutter or cut out bone shapes using a butter knife. The treats should be baked for one hour and cooled thoroughly. Store them in a covered container for up to two weeks. You will notice these treats are hard and crunchy just like real Milk Bones. This recipe makes a lot of treats and is very inexpensive.

Once you've made your own Milk Bone dog treats you may get the urge to bake other treats, biscuits, bones and chews. There are plenty of resources online and books devoted to the subject of making your own homemade dog food and treats. One title you may want to check out is The Ultimate Dog Treat Cookbook by Liz Palika and Troy Cummings.
