Another book you may want to take a look at is the Ultimate Dog Treat Cookbook by Liz Palika and Troy Cummings. These books and others on this subject can be found at any major bookstore.

Once you've found a recipe you want to try the next step is to gather all your supplies and ingredients. Everything you'll need to bake dog treats at home can be purchased at the supermarket. If you can, buy organic because it is healthier and higher in quality. You want to give your dog the healthiest treats possible.

Here is a simple recipe for liver treats you can try. You will need the following ingredients:

2 lbs chicken liver
3 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
2 cups oatmeal
1/8 cup chicken broth (fresh or low sodium canned)
4 eggs, beaten

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Use a food processor to process the liver until it is a baby food consistency. Combine pureed liver with other ingredients in a large bowl and knead until the dough is smooth and stiff. Refrigerate the dough for about an hour to make it easier to work with. Roll the refrigerated dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thick. Cut cute shapes out of the dough with a knife or use a cookie cutter. Bake treats on a cookie sheet for 30 minutes. Make sure treats are completely cooled before giving them to your dog. These homemade liver baked treats can be stored in a covered container in the refrigerator for a week or two.
