Dog Treats Recipes

Many dog owners these days would rather make their own homemade dog treats rather than going for store bought. One reason for this is safety. There have been dog food and treat recalls where even the top brands were pulled off shelves because of possible contaminants. The last thing you want is to harm your dog by feeding him unsafe treats. This doesn't mean you can never buy store bought treats again. However making your own treats is definitely something to consider. Using easy dog treats recipes like the ones in this article you can create affordable, delicious, healthy goodies for your dog.

To make jerky for your dog, preheat your oven to 180 degrees. Thinly sliced liver or chicken breast works well for jerky. There is no magic time for making jerky, as it depends on how thick the pieces are and how much you are making. On average a batch of jerky takes several hours. You want it to dry out slowly and get hard and chewy. If you have a meat dehydrator or jerky maker you can use that, however most people don't have these items and just use their oven instead. When the jerky is done cool it thoroughly before serving to your dog. Homemade jerky can be kept for weeks or even longer as long as you store it in a covered container in the refrigerator or freezer.

Maybe your dog loves Milk Bone style treats. If so, you can make your own with a few simple ingredients. Combine 3 cups of whole wheat flour, one cup hot water, one beaten egg, one teaspoon salt, half a cup of powdered milk and half a cup of butter. Mix all ingredients except flour until well blended. Then add flour a little at a time and knead into a firm dough. Roll the dough onto a floured surface and cut out desired shapes. You can get bone shaped cookie cutters that make perfect doggie treats.

There are plenty of other dog treats recipes on the Internet and in cookbooks. Because so many dog owners do want homemade dog treat recipes there have been several books written on the subject. Here are some titles you may want to check out if you are interested in home baked dog treats: Good Treats Cookbook for Dogs by Barbara Burg, Short Tails and Treats from Three Dog Bakery by Dan Dye and Mark Beckloff and the Ultimate Dog Treat Cookbook by Liz Palika and Troy Cummings.
